President: Steve Anderson
Steve is a retired Naval Officer and NATO Officer. He was a 17-year member of Voices International, a mixed-voice show choir based in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. He and his wife Deborah were both founding members. Steve (first singing Tenor and later Bass) was their first Chairman, and held that role for 15 years. Deborah initially sang Alto, but then took on Choreography for the group for over 10 years. Voices International expanded from 20 folks who in 1997 just wanted to get together and sing, into a 50-voice semi-professional choral group performing a wide variety of music, over a dozen shows each year, and participating in international festivals from New York City to Vienna. Their time in Luxembourg turned out to be a great opportunity for both to delve into many artistic experiences. They enjoyed numerous roles in the musical and theatrical arenas, both on- and off-stage.
VP Music & Performance: Randy Hagan
Randy came to the Land of the Sky Chorus from the San Antonio, TX Marcsmen, where he and son Trevor began their adventure with Barbershop. Although Randy had been singing for 50 years in various choral capacities (church and community choirs/choruses), he had never sung a cappella or barbershop. After joining the Marcsmen he knew he’d found his calling. Since then he has performed on the International stage, won a District novice quartet championship, and served as a chapter treasurer. Before moving to N. Carolina, Randy completed a 40-yr Air Force career and has retired here with his wife (a 30-yr AF retiree) and son Trevor. In addition to membership in Land of the Sky Chorus, he also sings with Carolina Vocal Express (on the International Stage!) and with Carolina Statesmen.
VP Chapter Development & Membership: Randy Freeman
Randy Freeman first became interested in music when he started playing trumpet in fifth grade. Though he did not sing in High School he discovered a love for singing in his early adult years and sang in a gospel trio with two of his brothers. They called themselves “The Freeman Brothers”. He was introduced to Barbershop in his early 40's and sang with the Circle City Sound chorus in Indianapolis. After three years with CCS he had to withdraw for a while due to work and family circumstances but came back to Barbershop in his 50's and remained active with the Indianapolis chapter until February of 2014. He sang in three quartets while active with the CCS chorus. Randy served as Membership VP and also as Marketing & PR VP while with the Indianapolis chapter. He left Indiana and moved to South Carolina in 2014.
His Sweet Adeline sister who lives near Columbia, SC introduced him to a lovely southern lady who is also a Sweet Adeline. She stole his heart and became his wife in April of 2015. He had become a member of the LOS during their courtship and was also in a Seniors quartet named Evergreen while with the chapter. He moved to the Columbia area to live with his bride but has maintained his connection with the LOS and recently renewed his membership. He and his wife will be moving to upstate South Carolina in the spring of 2020. He is looking forward to singing with and serving the chapter as well as singing in another quartet.
Secretary & Events/Program VP: Jim Gordon
Jim currently serves as chapter Secretary, member of the Music Team and Baritone Section Leader. He is the initiator and coordinator of the District Harmony Platoon which is designed to expand opportunities for all to experience the joy of singing in a quartet. During his 30 years experience with the Barbershop Harmony Society he has been active singing in choruses and in quartets. He has held every chapter office from President to Secretary.
Treasurer: Charles Marth
Charles has been a chemistry professor at Western Carolina University for almost 20 years. He has sung in church choirs for many years, but just discovered barbershop two years ago – and was immediately hooked on the a cappella sound. In January of 2021 he was honored at the request to be the treasurer for this wonderful group. Charles grew up in Illinois, then came south to attend Duke University. He and his wife now live in Haywood County (where she grew up) and enjoy spending weekends at their cabin in the mountains near Lake Logan.
VP Marketing & Promotion: Beverly Greene
Beverly has been "around" the chorus since the '90s, primarily handling design and marketing and volunteer, thanks to her (late) director/husband, Chuck Greene. She currently sits on the Carolinas District Board as the Dean of Leadership Academy, and has been a Certified Leadership Facilitator with BHS since 2017, as part of the BHS Healthy Chapter Initiative. Beverly has visited many chapters in the US and Canada with these roles, as well as the CACM workshops. Her background includes (among other things) commercial design, web development and social media management. Beverly was also the first female to be appointed to a BHS BoD in 2016, as part of their new open board policy, and was awarded BOTY in 2019. She also coached and accompanied Fourmata (an Owens High School quartet) to the BHS Midwinter contest in 2019, and currently sings lead with the local mixed ensemble, Asheville Accidentals.
Member-at-Large: Randy Johnston
Among other talents, Randy has been the electronic "guru" behind our chorus' "in car" chapter meetings, that we term "CARbershop." He is well known for donating his time and equipment to this effort, as well as District events. Randy sings lead in our local Doo-Wop quartet, ShBoom.
Immediate Past President: Bryson Ley
Bryson's professional singing career started as a paid (twenty-five cent/wk) church choirboy at age 8. He continued singing through HS and in college was member of the Dartmouth Injunaires who sang close harmony a capella music. As a singing busboy in Aspen, he managed to eat and ski for a year before going on to medical school. Since he found barbershop 14 years ago, he has enjoyed every minute, first with the Wilmington Cape Fear Chordsmen and now with the Land of the Sky Chorus, and also the Interntional competitor, Carolina Vocal Express. Bryson also works with the local high school youth singers.
Other lives have included speciality medical practice in endocrinology and faculty teaching positions at Brown University and UNC Chapel Hill. He is also Father to a handsome son and daughter-in-law, Grandfather to a beautiful granddaughter, and fortunate to be in a long and happy marriage.
